Antarctic Women's Network

The Antarctic Women’s Network (AWN) is a network for women who work in the Antarctic Sector. We seek to harness the collaborative nature of women, and Tasmanians, to support each other, elevate and celebrate the role of women in the Antarctic sector.

About the AWN

The AWN is a sub-committee of the Tasmanian Polar Network. The activities it organises are part of the TPN.

The AWN Committee, comprised of a Convenor, Secretary and Treasurer, and up to five general members. Interested members may join the Committee via expression of interest.

The AWN Committee meets quarterly to discuss events, principles and other important factors related to the operation of the AWN.

What does the AWN do?

The objectives of the AWN are to:

• provide a platform where women in the Antarctic sector can seek support from peers
• elevate and celebrate the role of women in the Antarctic sector
• provide a platform where women in the Antarctic sector can present their work to other like-minded people, the community, and the public
• recognise women who excel in their area of Antarctic-related expertise through awards, elevation in the community, and other suitable opportunities
• facilitate conversations, workshops, seminars, and conferences to assist women to identify and address common challenges in the Antarctic sector and strengthen resilience
• support national and international efforts to establish other networks.

The AWN is aiming to hold four public events in 2024.

Who Can join the AWN?

The AWN is open to all who identify as a woman and who work in the Tasmanian Antarctic Sector, whether they work in industry, government, educational, scientific, research, or other organisations that are explicitly connected to the Antarctic or Southern Ocean. Members do not have to have visited Antarctica.

Membership of the AWN refers to being on the email list for notification of AWN news and events.
