Why is Tasmania's Antarctic Sector important

Connections to the Antarctic run deep in Tasmania’s psyche. Some of the first Antarctic explorers used Tasmania as a base, and many Tasmanians have either visited Antarctica or know someone who has. Hobart’s location means that Hobartians gaze down Storm Bay towards the Southern Ocean and watch the impressive icebreakers carrying expeditioners to their adventures.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean activities and the skills, talent and entrepreneurialism of Tasmanians are significant contributors to Tasmania’s economy, culture and international reputation.
