Hobart: a gateway city

What is an Antarctic Gateway City?

Hobart is one of five gateway cities around the world. Most ship voyages and flights to Antarctica originate in one of these cities, which provide a range of specialised services supporting Antarctic activities. The gateway cities are:

  • Cape Town (South Africa), gateway to Dronning Maud Land
  • Christchurch (New Zealand), gateway to east Antarctica and Ross Sea
  • Hobart (Australia), gateway to east Antarctica
  • Punta Arenas (Chile), gateway to the Antarctic Peninsula
  • Ushuaia (Argentina), gateway to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Hobart is however much more than a gateway to Antarctica. It is a world centre of Antarctic activity. Hobart is a hub of Antarctic science, education, research, and logistics, making Hobart the world’s largest centre of cold-climate expertise and research.
