Explore Antarctica in Tasmania
Reminders of Hobart’s unique connection with Antarctica, the sub-Antarctic and the Southern Ocean can be found all around the Hobart waterfront and beyond. Monuments, memorials and museums remind us of human achievement and adventure in Antarctica, such as the bronze Bernacchi statue on the water’s edge below the Victoria Dock Bridge, and a replica of Mawson’s Hut at Elizabeth Pier. Reminders of the continuing French connection with Tasmania can be seen at memorial French Garden within the Royal Botanical Gardens and at a Memorial to Dumont D’Urville’s French Antarctic Expedition of 1837-1840 at Cornelian Bay Cemetery.
