Hobart has excellent port facilities only five minutes from the city centre. Tasmanian Ports Corporation (Tasports) run services for Antarctic research and supply vessels at Hobart Port with competitive rates. Ship operators have access to pilotage, towage, fuel provisioning, stevedoring, secure expedition storage facilities and quarantine and maintenance services. Registered bond store facilities are available onsite close to the quayside.
Hobart Port has a dedicated Antarctic and cruise terminal at Macquarie 2 Wharf, which also houses the Australian Antarctic Division’s (AAD) world class Cargo and Biosecurity Centre. Further infrastructure and Antarctic logistics investment is planned for Macquarie Wharf, with facilities that will support the year round lay-up and support of the next generation of Antarctic resupply and research vessels. It will be home to Australia's new and world leading icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina which will replace the Aurora Australis from October 2021.
Hobart has local shipping agents with extensive experience in servicing marine and Antarctic science, research vessels as well as road, sea and airfreight services and customs brokering. Fuel bunkering is available at Self’s Point, 3 km upstream from Hobart port.
Hobart Airport also meets the international Antarctic sector’s need for quality gateway facilities. The category two international airport, 17 km from the Hobart CBD has warehousing facilities and on-site aviation rescue and fire-fighting services. It is currently the home airport for the AAD Airbus A319 intercontinental Antarctic air link service. The Airbus operates regularly from Hobart to Australia's Wilkins aerodrome, and the United States McMurdo runways, transporting personnel and equipment for a range of national programs operating in Antarctica. RAAF C-17 flights also currently travel between Hobart and Wilkins each season delivering heavy lift cargo for the AAD.
The Hobart Airport runway has been lengthened to allow for larger payloads and longer range flight. This will meet the needs of a number of international Antarctic programs with aviation requirements in East Antarctica.
In addition, Hobart Airport is developing an expanded Antarctic and freight precinct plan to support current operations and opportunities for a future East Antarctic aviation network. This investment in the airport will support establishment of a year-round aviation capability between Hobart and Antarctica, should it be approved.
